Ocular Prostheses
Ocular rehabilitation with natural results
When it is necessary to remove an eye due to disease, trauma, or tumor, rehabilitation with a high-quality ocular prosthesis allows the patient to recover a completely natural appearance and significantly improve their quality of life. Dr. Martínez Solís performs the removal and then works hand-in-hand with specialized prosthetists to achieve the best possible aesthetic and functional result.
When might you need this procedure?
- You have an eye with no visual function that causes chronic pain
- There is an intraocular tumor that cannot be treated by other methods
- You suffered severe ocular trauma
- You already have an old prosthesis that requires adjustment or replacement
- You want to improve the appearance of a lost eye
How is the procedure done?
Evaluation and preparation
Complete assessment of the eye condition and patient expectations. The available implant and prosthesis options are explained in detail.
Evisceration or enucleation
Depending on the case, the contents of the eye (evisceration) or the entire eye (enucleation) are removed and an orbital implant is placed to maintain volume and allow prosthesis movement.
Prosthesis fabrication
In collaboration with an ocular prosthetist, a custom prosthesis is made that replicates the healthy eye in color, size, and shape.
Fitting and follow-up
Once the orbit has healed, the prosthesis is placed and adjusted so that the movement is symmetrical and natural.
Recovery and aftercare
The first 2–4 weeks require cavity care. The provisional prosthesis is placed around 6 weeks. The definitive prosthesis is adjusted at 3 months. With proper care, a prosthesis lasts many years.
